Referral Programs

By: Lavon Simpson

Have you ever eaten at a restaurant because a friend recommended it? Or have you ever made a purchase because the product was highly reviewed by your peers? Think about referrals in your own business. If your clients like your product or service, they will most likely be happy to refer you to their friends. Creating a culture of referrals can transform your customers into passionate advocates for your brand – and it doesn’t get much better than that!

4 Tips for Your Referral Program

Creating the right referral program can be a little difficult if you don’t know how to get started. Here are four steps that can help you out:

1.      Tell Referrers What You’re Looking For

The first step to running a successful referral program is to make it clear to your referrers what type of referrals make sense for your company. Provide potential referrers with an “Ideal Referral” profile so that your customers and friends know what you are looking for. This will save time for both the referral and for your business development team.

2.      Provide Incentives

Actually giving your customers something in return for their referral will result in more referrals. This doesn’t mean that you have to give the referrer cash, or a chance to win cash. In fact, a University of Chicago study reported that non-cash incentives can be more effective than cash incentives. Learn what motivates your customer base.

3.      Make Referring Easy

This will vary depending on how you run your business, but the bottom line is that people won’t participate in referral programs if it’s difficult for them to do so. If you are a brick-and-mortar establishment, have your referral program set up inside the store and have an easy-to-fill-out form with an employee available to help. If you think that your customers would respond better to an online referral program, then set up a mobile phone app or a site that they can easily access and navigate.

4.      Thank Your Customers

Thanking your referrer for not only submitting a referral but also after their referral becomes a client is a great way to continue building a relationship with your customers. Send a handwritten note – it is one of the best and most sincere ways to thank a referrer.
